(Amaranthus gangeticus) - Certified Organic Seed - Grown at Greenpatch Organic Seeds

    How to Grow

Amaranth Grain is an annual growing to 2m tall.  It is very hardy, handling dry conditions well but fertile soil is preferred for a larger more robust plant that will result in a better grain/seed harvest. Once the seed heads begin to dull to a pale yellow/white colour you will find mature seeds within the head. Harvest the whole head and allow it to dry for at least 1-2 week. You can then get the seeds out of the head with some basic seed cleaning equipment such as a screen, buckets and fan.

Pests include snails, slugs and heliothis caterpillar. Use snail bait and neem to control these pests.

    Uses

Amaranth Grain is primarily grown for the use of it's seeds as you would quinoa and rice. Boil seeds until they have expanded and absorbed the moisture.  Amaranth grain is low in oxalic acid and young leaves can be eaten in salads or cooked. Seeds are Golden in colour, high protein and can be boiled or popped. Amaranth can also be grown as chook food, your hens will love to pick at the grain or forage through the plants picking at the leaves and insects.
