  • Asparagus - Mary Washington Plant

    Quantity:

(Asparagus officinalis) - Certified Organic Plant - Grown at Greenpatch Organic Seeds

Mary Washington is a perennial to 2m, popular old variety, robust spears to 15cm long.  Excellent when used fresh or cooked. This variety is known to be 'Male Dominant' meaning it will put more energy into spears and less energy into seed production. Harvest after 2 years in the summer months. Also known to be rust resistant, meaning more vigour and increased yield.

    Growing Conditions & Care:

Asparagus is a long lived perennial, take time to prepare your soil in advance, a fertile soil containing compost and manure is recommended, along with trace elements and minerals to promote healthy root production. Asparagus will not tolerate constant moisture, well drained soil is a must. Preferred Ph. ranges from 6.5 - 7.0. You will begin to harvest small spears two years from planting and expect a consistent harvest in the years to follow. Harvest spears in late spring right through the summer months. Begin to harvest spears at 10cm - 15cm in height, cut below ground level to maximize your harvest. In late Autumn to early winter the plant will become dormant, now is the time to prune all growth down to ground level and mulch your plant, this will help with the following crop and promote healthy new growth.

    Uses:

It has been noted that Asparagus may contain medicinal and healing properties, with certain varieties being used in Traditional Chinese Medicine. It is a common vegetable with a nutty refreshing flavour.

Sold in 75mm tube pot, one crown per pot.

Note: Plants will be dormant in the winter months.
