  • Corn Sweet - Anasazi

    Quantity:

(Zea mays) - Certified Organic Seed - Grown at Greenpatch Organic Seeds

Anasazi is a drought hardy ancient American Indian variety. Growing to 2 metres, producing up to 2 good sized sweet cobs per plant. The cobs are attractive with colours ranging from purple, red, yellow and a range of colours in between. It is the fastest to produce out of all our sweet corn varieties.

Please be aware that at eating stage it is a golden coloured corn with speckles of white. Harvest young for good flavour and store for up to a week refrigerated. The true multicolour happens when it is left to mature on the plant for seed.

    How to Grow

Corn is a heavy feeder of key nutrients in your soil, it is important to plant corn in very fertile soil with good moisture holding capacity. You can improve your soil by using compost, animal manures and fertilisers. Choose a full sun position and sow during the warmer months in Spring & Summer. Sow seed direct into the garden by forming a furrow roughly 2cm deep. Sow a couple of seeds together then cover with 2cm of soil and keep moist until germinated. Thin out plants to the strongest seedling once they germinate. Space seeds 20cm apart and try to grow in blocks of at least 10 plants to improve pollination.

Plants will set cobs between 70-90 days depending on the variety. For sweet corn varieties picking time is critical as the sweetness changes quickly. Once cobs have been set monitor the silk which is at the pointy end of the cob. Initially it will be very soft and a creamy green colour. As the cob matures the silk begins to brown on the outside, this is when you would start harvesting your first few cobs. If they are immature wait a little longer until they are just right.

Sow spring & summer direct into garden.

    Uses

    Corn/Maize Success Story

We received this seed as part of our corn/maize project. With many heirloom varieties no longer being grown in Australia we felt there was a need to find varieties, get them grown out and re-distribute seeds amongst home gardeners to ensure they are easily available into the future. Anasazi Sweet Corn was one of the very first varieties to be salvaged from our corn/maize project after we received 150g of seed. We decided to grow this variety and being so impressed with its compact height, sweet cobs and drought tolerance we have pushed it into the market and it is hot on the heels of Golden Bantam for being our most popular sweet corn. We will continue this project into the future and we are always on the lookout for unusual varieties or people willing to grow a crop for us.
