  • Kale - Black Toscana

(Brassica oleracea) - Certified Organic Seed

Black Toscana Kale is also known as Lacinato. Produces long dark green leaves, formed from the middle of the plant. Highly nutritious. Sweet flavour. Eaten fresh or steamed. High in vitamins, & minerals, pick leaves as required. Black Toscana produces over a long period even into the hot summer months.

    How to Grow

Kale is a fast growing annual that requires a full sun position with very fertile soil rich in organic matter. Sow seeds into pots/punnets using a good quality seed raising mixture. Cover seed with 5mm of soil and keep moist until germinated. Transplant seedlings to the garden when they are 5cm high and mulch thickly around the plant. We highly recommend covering all your Brassica's with Vege Netting when they are first transplanted to exclude the white cabbage moth. If the moth does lay it's eggs the best natural solution is the use of Dipel spray. Side dressings of fertiliser can be used if growth is slow.

Sow autumn-spring in pots then transplant to the garden at 5cm high

Leaves can be eaten when young in salads or garnish as baby kale. Mature leaves have a sweet flavour and can be eaten fresh in salads, steamed or tossed in stir frys, various baked dishes or try making Kale Chips which are incredibly delicious.
